A – Z: The PS1 Edition C is for Uga Buga!

At 10lb Gamer, we have a massive raging weakness for the magnificent and glorious Sony PlayStation. We also have a similar weakness for getting all nostalgic so what better way to satisfy both needs than by getting together and discussing our favourite games from those golden years.

The A-Z is a semi-regular series where we’ll tackle our favourite consoles and pick out our favourite games according to each letter. Today is the letter C. Last time, Liam was eagerly about to uncover one of his suggestions that we all need to play…

Crash Team Racing

Liam

Speaking of games we need to get together and play: Crash Team Racing. What a game that was. And to be controversial – better than Mario Kart.

Dave

I’m not a fan of Mario Kart so not controversial to me.

Ben

Yeah, no one here is really going to be upset by that. But one day we’ll have a real audience and they might be!

Liam

Crash Team Racing was great fun, it was daft and over-the-top, open circuits, and blowing shit up. Crash Bandicoot was such a big franchise at the time as well, it was one of the most iconic platformers on the PS1.

Ben

Totally agree, it’s still massively loved now.

Liam

Yeah, and the sound when you picked up the mask…

*Everyone UGA-BUGAs*

Ben

Crash was a phenomenal game, definitely one I had down to discuss. Not Racing but Crash Bandicoot. Tons of memories playing it with friends and tons of fun. Both are really worthy mentions.

Command & Conquer

Liam

I want to quickly thrown in another one before anyone else jumps in… Command & Conquer.

Dave

Oh, yes.

Ben

Oh, no.

Dave

I played Red Alert and it was awesome.

Ben

I think you mispronounced awful.

Liam

All Command & Conquers – Tiberian Sun, Red Alert, Red Alert 2 – I absolutely loved them.

Ben

They weren’t for me, guys.

Liam

Okay, give us your ‘C’ then oh wizened one!

Chrono Trigger

Ben

I have a whole bunch of Cs. But first I’m going to say Chrono Trigger even though it was a Snes game originally. I think this is the first really good RPG we’ve mentioned despite the Ps1 being an RPG fans wet dream. Ah wait, no we did mention Alundra.

Dave

We established that Alundra is a boat simulator. *OW*

*Dave drops a shuriken*

Ben

Chrono Trigger was awesome. I must have spent about 2 hours at the carnival right at the start of the game – it was brilliant.

Liam

Not because you got stuck like Dave did on a boat then?

Ben

No, I had so much fun there because there were tons of mini-games.

Dave

A bit like the Golden Saucer from Final Fantasy then?

Ben

Yeah, kind of, maybe on a smaller scale but a lot of fun despite that. There seemed like a load to do and some were quite difficult – at least for a young chap like myself. You could win cat food because you could also win cats! I don’t even think I was aware of why I was winning cat food at the time but I remember trying really hard to win loads of it. It also had a great story as well so not just carnival fun.

Dave

Did you ever play Chrono Cross?

Ben

I didn’t, I have no idea why not.

Dave

I’m not going to say much other than play it – it was fantastic.

Ben

I’ve needed to play it for a bout 15 years so a few months won’t hurt. Have to play Alundra first. Wouldn’t it be funny if I got stuck on the boat for 2 hours?

Ben

Like I said, a whole bunch of games for ‘C’ so I’m not going to go in to depth on this one (read about it in our Halloween Special) but I want to mention Clock Tower.

Liam

Little kid with the big scissors. Yep.

Colin McRae Rally

Ben

Next on my list was Colin McRae Rally.

Liam

(cue orgasmic sound) What a game!

Ben

The first time I played a rally game and I watched it as a kid so this game was the shit. For me – at the time – it was a little bit different in that you weren’t on a track racing other cars – you were just trying to beat a time and I loved it for that.

Liam

This was probably one of the first games that really brought rally games to the forefront really. I spent many hour playing it and it’s numerous sequels.

Ben

Probably only DiRT matched the original in my opinion though.

Ben

So, I have two more. One is Cool Boarders.

Dave

I was going to say this! And I already know what your last one is going to be.

Ben

Yes you do but anyway, I’m not sure if Cool Boarders was really a great game – at the time though it was brilliant. It was great for playing with your mates, trying to out-do each other with the best tricks.

On to my final ‘C’, Dave…

Croc

Dave

Is it Croc by any chance?

Ben

It is Croc! Legend of the Gobbos. Along with Test Drive, this was the very first game I got with my PlayStation that wonderful Christmas. I took my console to my aunties, spent all day couped up in a bedroom upstairs and nearly pissed myself because I couldn’t bare to put the controller down for a second. I played it all day and ignored everyone else. Croc was absolutely amazing – possibly my favourite platform game of all time.

Dave

Did you ever play the 3D Mario game on the N64 I think? Because Mario and Croc make almost the exact same noise. Yahoo!

Liam

You right, I remember this. It’s not exactly the same but it’s damn close. I remember playing Croc and thinking it sounds like Mario this!

Ben

I didn’t know that, so which came first? Mario or Croc?

Liam

Mario

Ben

Is that with the noise though? Obviously Mario has been around way longer but what about the noise?

Liam

I’m thinking it would be Mario.

Quite clearly we’re too lazy to look up the answer to this one – help us out. Who said “yahoo!” first – Mario or Croc?
